  DUBAI – The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has started putting smart meters in taxis operating in the emirate. By the end of next year, the RTA said each of Dubai's 10,500 cabs will have a high-tech meter. According to the RTA, they already installed 4,850 meters as of last month and a total of 7,850 meters will have been set up in taxis by the end of the year. The RTA said the features of the meter include: *Makani (My location) 10 digit coordinates to help the taxi driver accurately locate addresses and updated maps to access destinations. *"Out of Service" option so taxi drivers can enjoy a 90-minute flexible break for every shift. The meter will display an 'End of Shift' sign so commuters will know that the taxi driver is at the end of his shift and cannot be hailed during the last 45 minutes to allow easy turnover of the vehicle to the next driver. *Connection to an "aman" or safety system to monitor the speed of taxis on internal streets and main roads. *Optical sensors that will detect when a passenger boards the cab in case the driver forgets to turn on the meter. The RTA said Makani or Dubai Geographic Addressing System signs have been set up at entrances of buildings, villas, metro stations, warehouses, hotels, schools, mosques and farms across the emirate. The Makani coordinates contain a QR code that can be viewed via the Makani app or other geolocation apps that can be downloaded on smartphones. The RTA said 5,010 taxis are already linked with Makani with about 118,000 booking requests through Makani handled during the first half of the year. The Smart meter system costs Dh68.8 million.
