An Irish iftar in Dubai
DUBAI – How do the Irish have iftar in the UAE? Expat Media found out as we sat down in The Sum of Us in Dubai for an Irish-inspired iftar organized by Irish food board Bord Bia.
The evening started with insights from Irish Ambassador to the UAE, Aidan Cronin, about the origin and future of Irish produce, food and brands in the UAE.
There are now more than 50 Irish brands in the UAE and these products are not only enjoyed by the more than 10,000 Irish expats here, but by other residents as well, Cronin said.
We had a taste of Irish hospitality as the food began arriving. The menu was designed to include food produced by farmers and companies that are members of Origin Green, Ireland’s food sustainability programme.
The dining experience started with canapes of smoked mackerel and salmon from Atlantic Treasures and The Good Fish Company, devilled eggs from Golden Irish, and an extra tender leg of lamb salad from John Stone.
The mains were worth the wait: succulent roast duck from SilverHill and a perfect dry aged beef sirloin from John Stone.
The evening ended on a sweet note with dairy-free ice cream from Nobo, yoghurt from Killowen Farm sprinkled with Keogh’s Crisps for contrast.
