Thomas' transfer to Cavaliers put on the back burner pending recovery from injury

BOSTON - Isaiah Thomas vowed to return to the NBA as "the same player" he was before being sidelined by a hip injury. "I am not damaged. I'll be back, and I'll be the same player," Thomas emphatically told ESPN on Tuesday. This as Thomas's trade from the Boston Celtics to the Cleveland Cavalier has been delayed while the player is recovering from his injury. ESPN quoted league sources as saying that Cleveland and Boston have started to discuss a solution on Tuesday with the Cavs no longer seeking Thomas but Cleveland is still out to get one of Boston's first-round picks as compensation. The discussions have also included second-round considerations, the sources also said. Aside from the 28-year-old Thomas, the Celtics also traded forward Jae Crowder, center Ante Zizic and a 2018 unprotected first-round pick via the Brooklyn Nets, in exchange for Kyrie Irving. Irving had long wanted out of Cleveland because he wants to join the team where he is a major player, hinting that he doesn't want to play second fiddle anymore to Cavaliers stalwart LeBron James. Thomas, who missed out on the Eastern Conference finals because of his injury, told ESPN: "There's never been an indication that I wouldn't be back, and there's never been an indication that this is something messing up my career. Maybe I am not going to be back as soon this season as everyone wants me to be, but I'm going to be back, and I'm going to be the same player again. No doctor has told me anything different than that." "I haven't had one doctor tell me that this injury is going to hurt my career. Surgery was not the best option in this case. I aggravated it in March when (Minnesota's) Karl-Anthony Towns fell on me. I kept playing on it and making it worse -- until I couldn't play anymore last season," he also said. Meanwhile, Thomas said he has been in constant touch with the Cavaliers since his physical exam Friday last week in Cleveland, adding: "I know that this (hip) won't be a problem into the future.
