10 killed, 102 wounded in West Bank raid

Israeli troops attacked Nablus, a Palestinian city in the occupied West Bank, in a daytime arrest operation, killing at least 10 Palestinians and injuring 102 on Wednesday (January 22). The raid is one of the bloodiest battles in nearly a year of fighting in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, which left a structure in ruins and stores covered in bullet holes. The Palestinian Ministry of Health said that among those murdered were a 72-year-old man and a 16-year-old kid. At least six found dead were members of the Lion's Den, the Nablus Brigade, and the Balata Brigade, based in a neighboring refugee camp. The Israel Defense Forces reported that three gunmen were killed, two of its soldiers were hurt, and an investigation was ongoing regarding more Palestinian deaths and injuries. According to the ministry, the majority of the wounded were struck by live bullets, and at least six were in critical condition. "We condemn the occupation's raid into Nablus and call for an end to the continued attacks against our people," said Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. There were reports of conflicts between Palestinians and Israeli forces in Jenin, Hebron, and East Jerusalem soon after Israeli soldiers left the area. Thousands of people gathered in the streets of Nablus for funeral processions. The election of the most right-wing administration in Israel's history, which includes settler activists who have advocated for the growth of settlements, harsher policies toward Palestinians, and the de facto annexation of the entire West Bank, has coincided with the increasing cases of violence.
