9 Palestinians killed in Israeli airstrikes A day after Israeli soldiers killed nine Palestinians in the Jenin refugee camp, including an elderly woman, Israel has relaunched airstrikes on the blockaded Gaza Strip. At least 20 were injured. The Jenin hospital authorities identified the deceased elderly woman as Magda Obaid, and four injured were in critical condition. According to Obaid's family, she was shot while looking out her window. Al-Maghazi Refugee Camp in the territory's center had suffered 13 attacks from Israeli airplanes. An open region east of Beit Hanoun in northern Gaza and the al-Zaitoun neighborhood in the south of Gaza City were both struck. Israeli drones fired two missiles at targets in Gaza before the fighter jets struck. According to the Israeli army, the airstrikes on Gaza, which has 2.1 million residents and is one of the world's most densely populated territories, came after two rockets were fired at Israel at midnight. Southern Israel had heard air raid sirens both during the initial two rocket launches and again during the Israeli airstrikes. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad admitted to having fired the missiles. The Jenin raid has been called a "massacre" by Palestinians. Yoav Gallant, Israel's defense minister, said the Israeli military has been ordered to "prepare for action…in case we need to continue – until quiet is restored for the citizens of Israel." Tor Wennesland, UN's special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, expressed his worry at the violence on Twitter and said he was working with the Israeli and Palestinian authorities to "de-escalate tensions, restore calm and avoid further conflict."
