ITC takes initiatives to reinforce school transport safety

To provide more than 155,000 students with safe and convenient transportation throughout the emirate, the Integrated Transport Centre (ICT) and the Department of Municipalities and Transport in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi have undertaken several initiatives. The initiative comes as part of ICT's preparations for the new academic year, 2022–2023, and within the campaign "For Your Safety" under the title of "Your Children are in Safe Hands," which aims at enhancing communication with parents and the relevant entities of school transport. The ITC further emphasized that to ensure safe and secure transportation for students, school bus drivers, supervisors, and operators must completely abide by all standards and regulations specified for school transport buses. The ITC reiterated that adherence to speed limits and designated bus routes, as well as the proper use of the side-mounted "Stop" sign that requires a complete stop for all vehicles on both sides of the bus within a distance of at least five meters, falls under the responsibility of the school bus driver. Failure to stop when the bus's side-mounted "Stop" sign is in use results in a punishment of 1,000 AED and ten traffic points. Additionally, bus drivers are required to flash their lights when students are crossing streets and roads. Bus drivers must only allow students to exit the vehicle at the approved locations. After completing each cycle, they must ensure no students are on the bus. Supervisors make sure that all students buckle up, maintain a first aid kit on the bus at all times, and help pupils under the age of 11 cross streets safely so they can be delivered to their guardians. Bus supervisors must also ensure that each student's guardian is present at the bus arrival point if their children are under 11. The ITC emphasized the necessity of frequent school bus sanitization as one of the many general steps that help protect pupils' health and safety. Additionally, the ITC implores parents and the general public to report any infractions committed by bus drivers and any comments made about the security or safety of school buses by calling the Abu Dhabi government call center at 800555. On the other hand, the ITC has organized several awareness-raising workshops for school bus drivers and supervisors. BKM/ Expat Media
