Aside from ban, Retired Romanian tennis star also fined US$10K

  LONDON - Retired tennis icon Ilie Nastase has been barred by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) from holding any official roles in tennis until 2021 for his profanity-laced outburst during a tie in a Fed Cup match between Great Britain and Romania at the Black Sea resort of Constanta in Romania last April. The 70-year-old Romanian, who retired from professional tennis 32 years ago, was also fined US$10,000. The federation however said Nastase can attend any of the four tennis majors (Australia Open, French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open) because they "lie outside the jurisdiction of the International Tennis Federation." Nastase was penalised for making "abusive and threatening comments" to Britain's no. 1 female tennis player Johanna Konta, Great Britain team captain Anne Keothavong and the umpire during the tie after Konta and Keothavong complained about crowd noise during the match between Great Britain and Romania. Konta was so upset by the verbal abuse from Nastase that game officials suspended her match against Sorana Cirstea. Also during the tie, the ITF said Nastase made "racially insensitive comments" about the skin color the unborn child of African-American tennis superstar Serena Williams while Romanian player Simona Halep was asked by reporters for a comment about Williams and her pregnancy. Reporters quoted Nastase as saying: "Let's see what color it has. Chocolate with milk?" Williams, 35, slammed Nastase for the remark. The African-American tennis superstar is pregnant with her first child with fiance, Reddit co-founder Alex Ohanian. Ohanian is white. Because of those string of offenses, Nastase was provisionally suspended by the ITF last April. Last week, the ITF decided to ban the Romanian from acting in an official capacity in all of its team competitions and tennis circuits until 2021 and from attending such events until 2019.
