A 54-year-old Japanese woman has been arrested after allegedly locking her common-law husband on a balcony overnight, leading to his death from hypothermia. Authorities in southern Japan’s Nagasaki region confirmed that the woman is facing charges of assault and lethal confinement. According to Masafumi Tanigawa, a police official, the woman forced the 49-year-old man onto their balcony in February 2022 and left him there naked overnight. The following morning, police responded to an emergency call and found the victim “nearly dead” in a room inside the residence. He later succumbed to hypothermia. The Mainichi daily newspaper reported that temperatures dropped to 3.7°C on the night of the incident. Adding to the case’s complexity, the woman had previously attacked the victim with a knife, causing injuries that took two weeks to heal. Despite the serious allegations, the woman is denying all charges. “I’ve done nothing,” she told authorities, according to Tanigawa. Police have not yet disclosed why it took two years to formally charge the woman.
