49 jaywalkers killed, 377 injured in Dubai accidents

  DUBAI – The Dubai Police reiterated its warning to pedestrians against crossing in undesignated places, saying that jaywalking continues to be among the top causes of road deaths in Dubai. Last year, 49 people died and 377 others were injured after crossing the road in undesignated areas and being run over by vehicles on busy streets, according to Dubai Police. Most of the accidents happened at night, said Colonel Jasim Khalil Mirza, director of the Security Awareness Department at Dubai Police. “We want people to be more careful when crossing the road and only use the designated areas to cross. Think before crossing the road,” Mirza said. “People shouldn’t cross until the road is clear. People should follow traffic signals and cross from designated areas,” he added. Dubai has imposed a Dh200 fine for jaywalking, while motorists who do not give way to pedestrians will be given a Dh500 fine and six black points. There were 77,016 people fined for jaywalking last year, compared to 64,620 fines in 2015, according to the Dubai Police.
