A Dubai court has sentenced an Australian man to life imprisonment for the murder of his friend in a Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) apartment. The Dubai Criminal Court found the accused guilty of premeditated murder following an incident in October 2022. The attack occurred during a personal dispute between the accused and the victim in the early hours of October 26, 2022. The victim's body was discovered the next morning by a female acquaintance of the accused, who had been asked to check on the victim. The woman testified in court that she entered the apartment to find the lifeless body, blood-stained floors, and called the police immediately at 11:52am. Court records revealed that the father of the accused was also present in the apartment on the day of the incident but had left before the murder occurred. Upon returning three hours later, the father discovered the victim's body and confronted his son. “He was acting strangely and tried to gag me when I questioned him,” the father told investigators. Rather than reporting the crime, the father coordinated with another son in Australia to arrange a hotel stay in Sharjah and a flight back to Australia for the perpetrator. The accused, however, was apprehended the next day at the Sharjah hotel. The father was charged with failing to report the crime but was spared imprisonment due to his age and relationship to the offender. Under UAE law, close relatives of criminals may receive leniency for failing to report a crime. A life sentence in the UAE equates to 25 years of imprisonment, followed by deportation. The verdict, issued on December 23, remains subject to appeal within 14 days. ICA/Expat Media
