150 kgs. of marijuana and 2.7M Captagon pills confiscated by authorities

  ABU DHABI – Joint operations by UAE, Saudi Arabia and Oman narcotics operatives conducted in the first six months of the year have managed to bust international drug syndicates and resulted in the confiscation of 150 kilograms of marijuana and 2.7 million Captagon pills. Twelve alleged drug smugglers were arrested as a result of the operations, according to Lt. Col. Saeed Abdullah Saeed Al Suwaidi, director general of the Anti-Narcotics Federal Directorate General at the Ministry of Interior. Al Suwaidi said the anti-drig departments of the Abu Dhabi and Sharjah Police received a tip about the drug cartels. Three of the raids were carried out with Saudi Arabian authorities while UAE police collaborated with Omani authorities in the fourth operation, it was learned from Al Suwaidi. The operations were made upon the instructions of Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. Col. Taher Al Dhaheri, director of Abu Dhabi Police's Drug Control Department, said they received a report about a network of drug traffickers in the Gulf region who were planning to smuggle 50 kilograms of hashish from Yemen to Oman through the UAE. Al Dhaheri said: "The main suspect was arrested in a joint operation with Omani authorities while he was receiving the drugs. The man showed great resistance and was found in possession of a fire gun, 31 bullets and Dh50,000 which he intended to pay to the people who delivered the drugs." Then two other anti-drug operations were conducted against a gang from an unspecified Arab country which intended to smuggle a large amount of hashish and Captagon pills to Saudi Arabia through the UAE. Al Dhaheri said the drugs shipments were monitored until they arrived to the UAE where the drugs were seized and the smugglers were arrested. For his part, Lt. Col. Majid Al Asem, director of Sharjah Police Narcotics Control, said 2.7 million Captagon pills were seized in the final operation conducted along with Saudi authorities. According to Al Asem, they were informed about a syndicate that planned to smuggle 2.7 million tablets of Ceptagon to Saudi Arabia through the UAE "so a team was set up to work on the case in collaboration with Saudi authorities and the gang members were all arrested." Meanwhile, Al Suwaidi said the amount of drugs seized in the UAE almost tripled while the number of drug-related arrests more than doubled as a result of aggressive anti-drug operations in the country.
