Joma Sison says Philippine rebel ceasefire ‘immediately possible’

  MANILA - The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) is resuming preliminary talks with the government to possibly end the decades war against communist rebels. Jose Maria Sison, CPP founder, said on Wednesday that he hopes for the immediate talks on interim ceasefire, which will be discussed during preliminary talks in Oslo on June 14 to 16. "What is immediately possible is an interim ceasefire, which effectively stops the fighting while peace negotiations are going on," Sison said, as quoted by the Inquirer. The formal resumption of peace talks is slated in July but Sison was hopeful that the ceasefire "will be felt immediately". Names of ceasefire liaison officers and third party monitors are expected to be come up during the meeting to ensure the compliance of the deal, Sison added. Once this will be in effect, government forces and communist rebels would be restricted inside their camps and guerrilla zones, respectively. However, Sison emphasised that both sides were entitled to their "right of self-defense".
