Untreated ear infection nearly kills expat in UAE

  ABU DHABI - When Indian expatriate Ganga Prasad Reddy suffered an ear infection, little did he think it might nearly kill him. The 33-year-old machine operator in Abu Dhabi thought the discharge from his ears was nothing to worry about, but a month later, he could no longer speak and half of his body was paralysed. A visit to NMC Speciality Hospital in Abu Dhabi revealed shocking news: there was a large, cancerous growth on the left side of his brain. Reddy underwent emergency surgery where a portion of his skull was removed. Doctors discovered that what was growing inside was not a tumour but a buildup of pus that has occupied a large cavity. Surgeons raced to remove the abscess but a day later, Reddy's brain had swelled in size. To save him from further health complications, doctors had to remove a part of his skull to make room for the brain to expand. The surgery was a success, and Reddy was given antibiotic treatment for a month while surgeons continued to drain pus from his brain. Doctors were later able to pinpoint the cause of Reddy's serious health problem: a middle ear infection that was left untreated for nearly two months. Dr Shankar Kutty, consultant neurosurgeon at NMC Speciality Hospital in Abu Dhabi, said that with treatment and physiotherapy, Reddy was eventually able to regain full speech and muscle control. Kutty said Reddy was discharged after nearly two months of treatment. The doctor urged people to never leave any "discharge or discomfort... left untreated”.
