Life in Dubai jail for Kenyan who murdered ex-girlfriend

DUBAI - A 29-year-old Kenyan man has been sentenced to life in jail for bludgeoning his ex-girlfriend with a baseball bat and stabbing her with a knife. The Kenyan, who worked as a cargo inspector in Dubai, committed the crime in March 2016 after the Kenyan victim ended their seven-year love affair and repeatedly avoided contact with him. The Dubai Court of First Instance handed the verdict on Sunday, finding the Kenyan guilty of premeditated murder, arson and damage to private property. The court heard that he had bought a baseball bat and knife in Deira before heading to his ex-girlfriend’s office. He hid in the emergency exit before storming her office at around 5.30pm. There, he battered her head with a baseball bat and then stabbed her in the neck.  He also set the office on fire. “Yes I killed her but I had not planned the murder in advance,” he told the court. The victim's co-worker, who shared an apartment with her, testified that the victim broke up with the cargo inspector because he was an alcoholic. “He could not deal with the fact that she had broken up with him. He called her daily but she never responded and always dodged him," she testified in court, adding that her co-worker had shared an apartment with the cargo inspector before moving in with her after they broke up. She recalled how, on the day of the incident, the cargo inspector arrived at the office "looking very angry". "He walked in and lit up a piece of cloth soaked with petrol and tossed it up... Then he rushed towards the victim, who tried to lock herself inside the washroom but could not do so as it was already locked from inside by another colleague. When the victim yelled at the defendant, he pounded her with the bat and as she fell down he hit her again," she testified, adding that she rushed downstairs to call for help. She said that when the police arrived, the attacker had already fled but they found the Kenyan woman dead with a knife sticking out her neck. Police were able to arrest the suspect and track him down at a friend's residence in Sharjah.
