Tragedy struck in Khorfakkan on Sunday evening (December 15) when a bus carrying 83 workers overturned at Wadi Washi Square, killing nine passengers and injuring 73 others. Sharjah Police attributed the accident to a brake failure, marking one of the most severe traffic incidents in the region in recent years. Brigadier Dr. Ali Al Kai Al Hamoudi, Director of the Eastern Region Police Department, said the brake failure caused the driver to lose control, leading to the vehicle overturning at the right exit to Khorfakkan. The bus was transporting employees of a private company based in Ajman, returning from a trip to Sharjah city after 8pm. A representative from the Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre revealed that the group had visited their company’s headquarters and completed grocery shopping earlier in the day. Emergency teams responded swiftly, with ambulances transporting the injured to Khorfakkan Hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, an investigation is underway to determine if negligence or mechanical issues contributed to the tragedy.
