Saudi monarch appoints son, Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as heir to the throne
RIYADH – King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia has made his 31-year-old Mohammed bin Salman as crown prince, replacing his nephew Mohammed bin Nayef.
US President Donald Trump, who recently visited the kingdom, congratulated Prince Mohammed. Trump said his administration is "committed to close cooperation on security, stability, and prosperity across the Middle East and beyond".
Trump also discussed with the new crown prince "the priority of cutting off all support for terrorists and extremists, as well as how to resolve the ongoing dispute with Qatar".
Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani also greeted Prince Mohammed as he expressed hope for "brotherly relations between the two brotherly countries". Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt had cut off diplomatic ties with Doha over the latter's support to terror groups.
Saudi TV showed the Prince Mohammed kiss the hand of Mohammed bin Nayef and kneeling in front of the older prince. "I am going to rest now. May God help you," the former crown prince said, to which Prince Mohammed replied: "May God help you. I will never do without your advice."
King Salman ordered the country's governors and other princes to pledge allegiance to Prince Mohammed and the conduct of a ceremony after night prayers on Wednesday at a royal palace in Mecca.
Top Saudi officials pledged loyalty to Prince Mohammed in statements carried by the kingdom's news agency while many citizens expressed their allegiance on social media.
Media reports said Prince Mohammed wielded huge power even before becoming crown prince by leading economic and social reform program in the ultraconservative Arab nation. Prince Mohammed is the defense minister, secretary-general of the Royal Court, and minister of the state.
The Agence France Presse (AFP) quoted Andreas Krieg of the Defense Studies Department at King's College London as saying that Prince Mohammed is now the "de facto ruler of the kingdom." "The king needed to strengthen his son's position amid the current turmoil in the region," Krieg said.
According to the AFP report, Prince Mohammed's youth is something new for a country that had been used to ageing leaders. King Salman is 81 and his predecessor, King Abdullah, was around 90 when he died in 2015.
Prince Mohammed's rapid ascent in the past two years has symbolized the hopes of the kingdom's young population, more than half of which is under 25, the report also added.
