Veteran journalist Korina Sanchez-Roxas has sparked an online debate after describing Gordon Ramsay’s iconic Beef Wellington as similar to the Filipino dish embutido. Ramsay, who recently visited the Philippines for his restaurant at Newport World Resorts in Manila, has earned international acclaim for his culinary creations. During a segment on BNC’s Agenda, Sanchez recommended the Beef Wellington as a must-try dish for visitors but drew comparisons to embutido. “Yun ang sinasabi nila na you have to try it. Yung fish and chips kasi British siya, at ‘tsaka yung Beef Wellington. Parang embutido ‘yun na karne sa loob tapos tinapay sa labas (That’s what they say you have to try. Fish and chips because it’s British, and Beef Wellington. It’s like embutido, with meat inside and bread on the outside),” Sanchez explained. She added, “Karne na halos hindi niluto, duguan pa. Tapos lalagyan mo ng tinapay. Tapos hihiwa-hiwain mo. Parang embutido (Meat that’s almost raw, still bloody. Then you cover it with bread. Then you slice it. Like embutido).” Netizens were quick to react, with some criticizing Sanchez for what they deemed an oversimplified comparison. “Definitely not. That’s an insult to a great chef,” said Timothy Norris. Another netizen, Tess Pike D’aubervilles, commented, “Lady, you need to polish those palate.” Others, however, defended the journalist, appreciating her lighthearted take. “She’s just being funny,” said Ganiel Gajudo. As the internet debate continues, Sanchez has yet to comment further. Her remarks, however, have drawn attention to how cultural contexts shape culinary interpretations, bridging traditional dishes and global cuisine. PIA/Expat Media
