Salonga, the original singing voice of the title character, says the remake will be fine without any singing parts

  MANILA - Actress-singer Lea Salonga supports a song-free live-action version of the 1998 animated feature "Mulan" where she provided the singing voice of the title character. In a series of tweets, Salonga said "I think it's pretty cool! Let this film be a different thing altogether". "The original legend of Mulan existed for over 1,000 years without the music. The new film will stand proud and tall without the songs." Salonga sang "Reflection", the theme song of the animated feature, and two other tunes. However, Salonga asked two things be done in the "Mulan" remake: an Asian actress who'd be believable as a boy or a man and a hunky "Shang", the male lead character. Salonga was asked how she feels about a live-action version of "Mulan" where there will be no singing as envisioned by the director, Niki Caro. Caro had said in a Moviefone interview that the live-action "Mulan" will have no songs "much to the horror of my children". The live version of "Mulan" will be unlike the live-action remake of the 1991 animated classic "Beauty and the Beast" shown last March 16 that had singing and dancing parts and had several songs. In a Philippine Daily Inquirer interview, Caro was asked to comment on Salonga's wish list and Caro said it was "awesome." "Look, this live-action version of 'Mulan' is inspired by, well, the inspirational Chinese ballad, as well as the beloved animated classic," Carlo said. "It's an epic and an adventure movie. We're still exploring the ways that we're going to use music in the film. But there will absolutely be music, and there will absolutely be Asian hunks, Chinese most specifically, yeah," she added.
