Moon vows to address escalating tensions in Korean Peninsula; may go to Pyongyang

  SEOUL – Moon Jae-in was sworn into office yesterday as South Korea's new president after he was elected in a special election that was held after the ouster and indictment of Park Geun-hye on accusations of corruption. Moon won by a landslide, garnering more than 41 percent of the total number of votes. As his first order of business, Moon, the first liberal leader of the country in a decade, vowed to address the ongoing tension in the Korean Peninsula due to North Korea's ballistic missile tests. "For peace of the Korean Peninsula, (I will) constantly be working. If it is necessary, I will fly immediately to Washington and also visit Beijing and Tokyo. If the condition is created, I will also go to Pyongyang," Moon said after his inauguration at the National Assembly in Seoul. He then motored to the Blue House, the presidential residence. If ever he goes to Pyongyang, Moon said he would want to talk to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un about North Korea's nuclear weapons and missiles program, which has caused worry and tension in the peninsula and angered the US. Moon's soft stance on North Korea contrasts that of his predecessor's aggressive stance on Pyongyang. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reportedly welcomed the election of a liberal leader in South Korea because it will result in a change in regional politics when it comes to Pyongyang. With regard the US, Moon said he will "sincerely negotiate" with Washington and Beijing over the deployment of an advanced US missile-defense system in the southern part of South Korea. Beijing opposes the deployment as it believes that system's radars will allow it to spy on China's military operations. Meanwhile, Moon has appointed former journalist and four-term lawmaker Lee Nak-yon as prime minister and Suh Hoon as the new head of the National Intelligence Service. He also named Im Jong-seok as his chief of staff, the second most powerful position next to the President.
