Life in jail for car number plate theft in UAE

  DUBAI – Stealing a number plate in the UAE may land you in jail for a lifetime, a Dubai Police official said as it was revealed that 799 car plates have been stolen in the country in the last three years. Car plate theft is a very serious offence, especially when stolen plates are used to commit major crimes, said Lieutenant-Colonel Adil Al Joker, head of investigation at Dubai Police’s Criminal Investigation Department. “Plate numbers of cars, trucks, buses and motorbikes can be stolen and placed on other cars for bigger crimes. By law — in some circumstances — the punishment for number plate theft can reach up to life in jail in the UAE,” Al Joker said. Criminals have fixed the stolen plates in cars they used to extort money from people on the streets while posing as police officers, police said. “The victims of such crimes give us the plate numbers but we discover later that it was stolen. Plate numbers can be used in various crimes which can disturb the security in the country,” Al Joker said. Major-General Abdullah Khalifa Al Merri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police, said the police force is looking at options to stop number plate thefts in the country. “We want to stop the theft of plate numbers in the country. We want to shape the future and find ideas to fight the crime. There will be suggestions in the session to study and then submit to the authority concerned to approve it,” Al Merri said. One of the suggestions includes rigging licence plates with an alarm system and a dye pack to surprise thieves.
