Life in prison for duo who raped Filipina manager in Dubai

  DUBAI – Two Bangladeshi men will be spending life in jail after they lost their appeal in the gang-rape case of a Filipina manager. The duo and another Bangladeshi, who remains at large, raped the Filipina whom they offered a ride in Dubai Motor City in December, 2014. They also sold her to another woman for Dh3,000 to work as a prostitute. The Dubai Court of First Instance in March sentenced the two to life in jail for kidnapping and rape. The third Bangladeshi was sentenced in absentia to life in prison. The two Bangladeshis currently in detention in Dubai sought for a lenient punishment at the Dubai court of appeals but their appeal was recently rejected. In court, the Filipina testified that she was waiting for a taxi after work in the evening when one of the Bangladeshis offered her a ride home. She told prosecutors that she sat in the backseat, but that the Bangladeshi driver had stopped to pick up two other Bangladeshis who sat beside her. "They groped me. I realised that they wanted to have sex with me... I asked them to take all my money and let me go but they didn't... they raped me," she told prosecutors, adding that the trio threatened to kill her when she resisted. She said that the car stopped at a parking area near the Dubai Police's headquarters where a woman arriving in another vehicle got into their vehicle and asked her to work as a prostitute. "I was afraid of staying with the men and went with her to a nearby villa. The woman locked me up inside a room... later the villa's watchman raped me," she told the court. When everyone in the villa fell asleep later, she escaped through a small opening in the kitchen wall and flagged a truck to take her to the police station.
