Nobel Peace Prize-winning dissident had been on medical parole

  BEIJING – Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2010, has died on Thursday of liver cancer, authorities said. The 61-year-old Liu had been diagnosed with cancer of the liver and was on medical parole since last month after his diagnosis in prison. Beijing did not allow Liu to get treatment abroad despite his request and pressure from the international community but the Chinese government eventually allowed German and American doctors treat Liu in a hospital in Shenyang. Shenyang judicial authorities said he was given emergency treatment starting last Monday after his condition continued to deteriorate. He succumbed to multiple organ failure. Liu was sentenced in December 2009 to 11 years in prison for "inciting subversion of state power" for co-authoring Charter 08, which called for political reform and human rights in China. Prior to that, Liu had been detained for more than a decade for his advocacy for democracy. He was among those who took part in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. US President Donald Trump expressed his "heartfelt condolences to Liu's wife, Liu Xia, and his family and friends." "A poet, scholar, and courageous advocate, Liu Xiaobo dedicated his life to the pursuit of democracy and liberty," the White House statement said.
