'We will not not give in to terror', says Prime Minister Theresa May; attacker killed by police

LONDON – Terror has struck the heart of the British capital London anew. A man killed four people, including a police officer, and wounded 40 others in a brazen attack outside the British Parliament building and while the legislative body was in session. The incident, which happened at 2:40 in the afternoon yesterday, caused a lockdown of the Parliament for several hours and dozens of Members of Parliament (MPs) were forced to remain in the session chamber as policemen rushed to the scene of the attack. The attacker was subequently killed by police. Senior counterterror police officer Mark Rowley said authorities have identified the attacker but are not releasing his name and that they consider the attack as an act of "Islamist-related terrorism". "This is a day that we had planned for -- that we all hoped would never happen -- but sadly it is now a reality," said Rowley, who is also acting deputy commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. Yesterday's terror attack was the most lethal in the United Kingdom since July 7, 2005 when the London public transportation system was hit by a series of explosions that killed 52 people. The four attackers involved in the bombings were all killed. A timeline of yesterday's incident showed that the man plowed through a crowd on Westminster Bridge that spans the Thames River, injuring scores of people, including three police officer. In the chaos, a woman fell into the river. The man then drove on until he crashed his vehicle on the railing outside the Parliament building. The attacker then ran into the Parliament compound and then stabbed an unarmed policeman identified as Keith Palmer on the grounds outside the legislative building. British Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the attack, calling it "sick and depraved" and that any attempt to defeat through violence the values that the British Parliament represents would not succeed. The location of this attack was no accident. The terrorist chose to strike at the heart of our capital city, where people of all nationalities, religions and cultures come together to celebrate the values of liberty, democracy and freedom of speech," the Prime Minister said. Right after the attack, the entire Westminster Area was placed on lockdown and the closed-out zone was expanded to include the London Eye with people still on the ferris wheel. The people on the London Eye were allowed to get off after the lockdown was lifted. A government employee, on the other hand, was seen giving mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to Palmer but he died of the strab wounds. The London Ambulance Services treated at least10 injured people on Westminster Bridge. The woman who fell into the Thames River during the chaos that ensued when the attacker plowed through the crowd on Westminster Bridge has been pulled out of the waterway but she has sustained serious injuries. London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: "My heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones and to everyone who has been affected." He also announced the deployment of additional policemen on London's streets.
