Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed 595 modern bus shelters across the emirate, marking significant progress in a project to install 762 shelters in key areas. With 89 percent of the project now complete, the new shelters are set to serve thousands of daily commuters and more than 192 million bus passengers every year, making bus travel more comfortable and accessible. RTA Director General Mattar Al Tayer said the project aims to build “an integrated urban environment that encourages residents and visitors to use public transport.” He added: “The new shelters represent a pivotal step in improving quality of life. We were keen to ensure that the new shelters combine modern design with services that guarantee a better mobility experience.” The shelters include shaded seating, advertising spaces, and display screens showing route maps, bus schedules, and arrival times. Four types of shelters RTA classified the shelters based on daily passenger usage: • Primary: 750+ passengers per day (air-conditioned sections included) • Secondary: 250–750 passengers • Basic: 100–250 passengers • Boarding/alighting stops: Under 100 passengers Many shelters accommodate more than 10 bus routes, improving route efficiency and reducing travel time. All shelters follow the Dubai Universal Design Code, including wheelchair spaces and features aligned with the “My Community… A City for Everyone” initiative to support People of Determination.
