Filipino congressman Lordan Suan of Cagayan de Oro’s first district has drawn widespread criticism after revealing the names of lawmakers who voted to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte—while also admitting that additional budget allocations followed the vote. Suan took to social media to defend his decision, stating: “I voted YES because it was the right thing to do. VP Sara and her family must be held accountable for their wrongdoings.” However, his remarks quickly turned controversial when he added: “After we voted YES, Speaker (Martin) Romualdez provided additional budget, allowing us to give even more assistance to the people. This is just the beginning.” His statement sparked immediate backlash, with critics questioning whether the impeachment process was influenced by political incentives rather than genuine accountability. As of Thursday (February 6), the post has gotten more than 91,000 angry and laughing emojis and was shared more than 40,000 times. Jesse Hipolito, a political analyst, remarked: “Congressman Suan’s admission raises serious concerns—was the impeachment vote purely about accountability, or were lawmakers influenced by political incentives?” Social media users were equally outraged. Reneboy Cabugnason Cabutay questioned: “Do you believe that pursuing this impeachment will truly benefit the Filipino people? We seek long-term solutions, not quick fixes.” Isaiah Peligrino added: “This testimony should invalidate the impeachment complaints as this rushed move has been tainted with bribes and corruption.” Meanwhile, the Philippine House of Representatives has officially voted to impeach Vice President Duterte, with 215 lawmakers signing the petition on Wednesday (February 5). The case now moves to the Senate for trial. Duterte, facing allegations of corruption and constitutional violations, has remained silent on the impeachment. Her legal troubles come amid her deepening rift with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The Senate’s decision on whether to proceed with the trial will be crucial in determining Duterte’s political future, as she is considered a top contender for the presidency in 2028.
