Major Bridge Connecting Bur Dubai to Dubai Islands to Open in 2026, Cut Travel Time to Just 16 Minutes

A new bridge that will connect Bur Dubai to Dubai Islands is expected to open to traffic in 2026 and cut travel time to just 16 minutes, according to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General of RTA, said the new bridge is part of the Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project that "will serve about one million people.. and slash travel time from 104 minutes to 16 minutes by 2030."

Al Tayer said the corridor will serve Deira and Bur Dubai in addition to several development projects such as Dubai Islands, Dubai Seafront, Dubai Maritime City and Port Rashid.

The new Bur Dubai-Dubai Islands bridge will span 1.4km with four lanes in each direction, and can accommodate 16,000 vehicles per hour. The bridge will complete the Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project.

It will also have a cycling lane and pedestrian path on one side of the bridge, with an elevator to help residents and tourists with convenient access.

The bridge will rise 15.5 metres above the Dubai Creek, and will have a 75-metre-wide canal to allow ships and boats to pass.

The Dubai Islands project will have direct entry and exit points on the Bur Dubai side through a bridge stretching across Dubai Creek between the Infinity Bridge and the Port Rashid Development Project. ICA/Expat Media
