Disney movie also slapped R-13 rating; film's release in Malaysia postponed

  KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian censors have deleted a "gay moment" in the Disney movie "Beauty and the Beast", a remake of the 1991 animated classic, before approving its release in the Muslim-majority Southeast Asian country. The Malaysia Censorship Board also slapped a PG-13 rating on the movie, which means that the censors consider some material as may be inappropriate for pre-teens. As a result of the cut, the movie's release in Malaysia has been postponed to a still undetermined date. Homosexuality is considered illegal in Malaysia. There are laws criminalizing sodomy, which can lead to imprisonment, corporal punishment, and fines. Malaysia is the second country to have taken action against the movie after Russia gave an adults-only rating on the film following pressure from an ultra-conservative lawmaker who was pushing for a ban because of the gay character, Le Fou, and the gay scene. In the US, a theater in the state of Alabama is not showing the film because of the gay scene while parents in Hong Kong are protesting the inclusion of Le Fou for being "too early" for children. Bill Condon, director of "Beauty and the Beast", earlier revealed an "exclusively gay moment" featuring Le Fou (played by comedian Josh Gad) and Gaston (portrayed by Luke Evans). Le Fou is Gaston's sidekick. But Condon, who is openly gay, said the "gay moment" is fleeting that moviegoers wouldn't even notice it. Malaysian chief censor Abdul Halim Salim told The Star newspaper that "Beauty and the Beast" has been approved for showing in Malaysia "with a minor cut". The release of the movie in Malaysia this week has been postponed while "an internal review" will be done, according to the management of Golden Screen Cinemas which was set to show the film tomorrow. Harussani Zakaria, the senior mufti for Malaysia's northern Perak state, sought a ban of the film from being shown in the country as the film would "sow the seeds of destruction and negative behaviour in our society". A mufti is a Muslim legal expert authorized to give rulings on religious matters. However, Malaysian minister of tourism and culture Seri Nazri Aziz criticized the brouhaha over the movie.
