‘Gay’ taunt on Instagram lands expat in jail while policeman goes to trial over sex

  DUBAI – A 29-year-old Filipino man has been sentenced to two years in jail for posting photos of a Dubai police officer on Instagram and for saying in the caption that the latter is a gay prostitute. At the Dubai Criminal Court on Monday (November 21), the Filipino, who works as a waiter in Dubai, confessed to committing the crime and blackmailing the Yemeni officer to pay him Dh8,000. The court convicted him of extortion and attempted blackmail and of maligning and dishonouring the policeman. He will be deported after serving his prison term. Records showed that the waiter also posted the policeman’s private mobile number on Instagram and said that the latter enjoyed sex with men. The policeman testified that the Filipino was his friend and that he learned about the malicious Instagram posts from other friends. “I told them it was not me who posted them and I headed to the police station to report the matter,” he said. He told police that the images used were ones he sent the waiter a year ago. He also said that the Filipino threatened to post more photos of him if he did not agree to be his lover, and then asked him for Dh8,000. “He wanted me to be his boyfriend and lover. He stole my personal photo from my Instagram account. He had my photo in the police uniform when I sent it to him a year ago. He wrote on my photo on Instagram that I am gay and enjoy bizarre sex,” the policeman told prosecutors.
