Indian prisoner says he is a changed man, submits certificate of good behavior

  DUBAI – A Indian national who was sentenced to life in prison for killing an Uzbek woman in 2002 has asked the court for pardon and his early release from jail as he is already a changed man and has repented for the crime. The Indian man was sentenced to life in prison by the Dubai Court of First Instance in 2002 for the premeditated murder of an Uzbek woman, who is an alleged prostitute, when they had an argument over payment. The convict was 27 years old then. The convict reportedly had sex with the woman thrice in the past but on the day of the incident sometime in January 2002, he and the woman had an altercation over payment for having sex with him. The Indian national hit the woman, strangled her and then stabbed her repeatedly at the back of the head. He disposed of the woman's body behind the Al Wasl Football Club in Al Jadaf area, Dubai and took with him the woman's mobile phone. The man was arrested after police traced a call coming from the woman's mobile phone, which the defendant kept in his house. The Dubai Court of First Instance meted a life sentence on the Indian national on October 28, 2002 for the premeditated murder of the Uzbek woman, stealing her mobile phone and having sex with the woman before killing her. The court also added a year to the life sentence for the theft charge. The Court of Appeal and Cassation Court both upheld the life sentence on the convict. On Monday, the convict, who is now 52, formally asked the Dubai Court of First Instance for pardon and early release. He said he has already changed and regretted what he had done. In his petition also, the convict invoked Article 1/45 of the Federal Law No. 43 of 1992 which states that a convict who has completed 15 years out of a life sentence (25 years) can file a special petition to be released early from jail. The convict also submitted a certificate of good behavior and a recommendation for his release issued by the Dubai Central Jail management. The court will decide on the convict's petition on April 27.
