Surgeons 'burn' parts of brain of Indian musician to correct neurological disorder

  BENGALURU – A musician in this Indian city underwent brain surgery to correct a neurological disorder but what is amazing is that he was playing a guitar while doctors were operating on his brain. The seven-hour procedure to correct the 32-year-old's dystonia was done in a hospital last week, a Times of India (TOI) report said. According to webmd.com, dystonia is "a movement disorder in which a person's muscles contract uncontrollably. The contraction causes the affected body part to twist involuntarily, resulting in repetitive movements or abnormal postures." In the Indian man's case, his dystonia caused three fingers on his left hand to cramp. Tushar (not his real name) experienced cramping of his three fingers more than a year and a half ago while playing a guitar apparently due to rigorous use, the TOI said. Dr Sanjiv C C, a senior neurologist from the University of British Columbia told TOI that while surgeons "burned" parts of Tushar's brain that triggered the abnormal tremors in his muscles, the musician played the guitar to help them locate the troublesome areas. "This problem occurred when he tried to play the instrument and real-time feedback was important for us to ascertain the exact location of the target to be repaired," the doctor said. On the other hand Dr. Sharan Srinivasan, a stereotactic and functional neurosurgeon at Jain Institute of Movement Disorders and Stereotactic Neurosurgery, explained that the surgery entailed burning the part of the brain triggering the abnormal tremors. Meanwhile, Tushar told TOI he was "amazed" to see his fingers improve while being operated on. "By the end of the surgery, my fingers were 100% cured and I could move them like before. Within three days of surgery, I walked out of the hospital all set to play guitar again."
