President gives self until the end of the year to resolve the conflict

MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte said he is giving himself until the end of the year to end the crisis in terrorist-besieged Marawi City. He explained that the conflict is taking time to be resolved as the government wants to save the lives of everybody, including the terrorists if possible. Islamic State-linked terrorists belonging to the Maute and Abu Sayyag groups attacked Marawi City on May 23. The siege prompted Duterte to declare Martial Law on the island of Mindanao. Talking to reporters in Davao City late last Saturday after attending a birthday celebration of the city's congressman, Duterte said: "I have until the end of the year to contain this thing. You know, the Marawi (crisis) is ending. What's prolonging it is our effort to save the lives of everybody, including the terrorists if possible. I objected, I ruled out the bombing of mosques because destroying that could mean the destruction of what's in the soul of Muslims everywhere." Duterte also said bombing the mosques may also lead to deaths of hostages since the gunmen belong to the Maute and Abu Sayyaf groups have kept the hostages there. Tthe military had said the terrorists are still holding up to 50 hostages, including a Catholic priest. Duterte said after the Marawi crisis is resolved, the government can focus on other issues, including the peace process with members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) who have become restive over the delayed passage by Congress of a law granting autonomy to parts of Mindanao that they dominate. Meanwhile, Malacañang vowed that the military would capture Isnilon Hapilon, the leader of the terrorists still holed up in Marawi. Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said they believe that Hapilon is still alive and in the city and that the terrorist leader is now surrounded by troops.
