Duterte says he 'accepted the explanation of the Marcoses' for keeping some ill-gotten wealth

  MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte announced on Tuesday that the Marcos family is willing to return "some ill-gotten wealth" to the government. Duterte said in a mix of Filipino and English: "The Marcoses, I will not name the spokesman, they said, we'll open everything and hopefully return what was found already." Duterte made the announcement during a mass-oathtaking of new government appointees on Tuesday at Malacañang. He did not give more details about his meeting with the Marcos "emissary". After the Marcoses were ousted in 1986 through the EDSA People Power Revolution, the Philippines had been trying to recover the family's alleged ill-gotten wealth through the Philippine Commission on Good Government (PCGG). The Marcoses had consistently denied amassing ill-gotten wealth while in power. According to Duterte, the Marcoses volunteered to return some of their wealth, including "a few gold bars" to the government to fund Duterte's priority programs.
