Dick Clark Productions calls Carey's accusation as 'absurd', 'defamatory'

  NEW YORK – The team of singer Mariah Carey accused Dirk Clark Productions, the company behind the annual ABS New Year's Eve special, of "setting her up to fail." The accusation was strongly denied by the production outfit, describing it as "absurd" and "defamatory." Carey's publicist Nicole Perna told Billboard magazine that Carey attended a rehearsal early of Dec. 31 and informed Dick Clark Productions that her earpiece was not working. Perna also said Carey "was not winging this moment and took it very seriously" and that the production "set her up to fail." Technical problems marred Carey's performance of her hit song "Emotions" and "We Belong Together". She said she could not hear the tracks being played. After it was apparent that she could not sing the second song, Carey walked off the stage. In a separate interview with CNN, Perna said: "There was a production issue. Technical difficulties. Unfortunately there was nothing she could do to continue with the performance given the circumstances." To this, Dick Clark Production issued a statement to CNN in reaction to the accusations made by Carey's team. "As the premier producer of live television events for nearly 50 years, we pride ourselves on our reputation and long-standing relationships with artists. To suggest that DCP, as producer of music shows including the American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, New Year's Rockin' Eve and Academy of Country Music Awards, would ever intentionally compromise the success of any artist is defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd." "In very rare instances there are of course technical errors that can occur with live television, however, an initial investigation has indicated that (Dick Clark Productions) had no involvement in the challenges associated with Ms. Carey's New Year's Eve performance.
