Jessam Villa on juggling work and having fun

  “Sorry for the late reply. I’m in a gig now, doing sound check,” came Expat Duets contender Jessam Chrissie Villa’s reply to our online chat. As a full-time office administrator and a part time singer, events coordinator, entertainer and party clown, the 37-year-old mother of two juggles a lot of responsibilities. She often crams as much activity into 24 hours, travelling across the UAE for gigs. Why does she do it? “For extra income. I need to do this because I have two sons and they are in college now… I’m a single mum,” Villa straightforwardly answered. And her boys don't make it difficult for her. “They are so proud and they always tell me to take care because my schedule is sometimes too hectic. About joining , they know this is my passion,” Villa said. She is competing with seven other pairs in Expat Duets, a first of its kind singing showdown in the UAE. She spends her Fridays and some of her free time preparing for the showdown with her singing partner Elton Bautista. They practice whenever and wherever is available, including on the drive to and from work. “I joined this competition to be known as a singer and performer in the UAE,” Villa said. Villa has never abandoned her passion, even when she moved from South Cotabato in the Philippines to the UAE eight years ago. A band singer back home, Villa found it easy to take up singing jobs in her first four years in the UAE. A bigger salary offer, however, prompted her to take up a job as an office administrator for a company in Business Bay. But she still picks up the microphone whenever she can. “I still sing part time at birthdays and other events, especially every Friday and Saturday,” she said. But don't they always say all work and no play makes Jill a dull girl? “It is manageable,” she said, “And I have fun doing it.”
