‘Message from djinn’ urged son to kill father in Sharjah

  SHARJAH – A “message from a djinn” or evil spirit was what influenced a Sudanese-American man to kill his own father, he told prosecutors at his trial at the Sharjah Criminal Court. The 18-year-old man is facing charges of killing his 50-year-old father by hitting him on the head with a fire extinguisher. A policeman testified in court that the victim was found lying in a pool of blood at their shop in Sharjah. The Sudanese-American man’s uncle testified in court that he came home to find his brother’s body on the floor and that his nephew had handed him a fire extinguisher and told him to “hit him with it, just like he did to his father”. The 18-year-old also allegedly handed him a small knife and asked “to stab him with it”. The uncle told prosecutors that he was not aware of any problem or dispute between the father and son, although his nephew had received psychiatric treatment. According to a police report, however, an argument between the father and son in the shop led to the murder. The Sudanese-American defendant denied the murder charge, saying that he had received a “message from a djinn” to kill his father. He also said he has no recollection of the murder. Police investigation showed that the 18-year-old had been living and studying in the US but was brought back to the UAE following a mental illness. The public prosecution is seeking the death penalty for the defendant. The defence lawyer has presented to court a pardon from the family members.
