President Pena Nieto declares national emergency following Magnitude 7.1 tremor

  MEXICO CITY – The death toll from Tuesday's Magnitude 7.1 earthquake that hit Mexico City and nearby areas has risen to 230. Among the dead were 21 schoolchildren. This as efforts to rescue people trapped in collapsed buildings and houses continued for most of the night and the following day after the deadly tremor, which came nearly two weeks after an 8.1 Magnitude tremor occurred off the Pacific coast of southwestern Mexico, toppling buildings and homes in Oaxaca. Tuesday's quake also happened on the same day as the 1985 killer temblor that struck the Mexican capital and killed thousands of people. President Enrique Peña Nieto said: "The priority now is continue rescuing those who are still trapped and provide medical attention to the injured." He called Tuesday's tremor "a new national emergency." "Unfortunately, many people have lost their lives, including girls and boys in schools, buildings and houses. I want to express my condolences to those who lost a family member or a loved one. Mexico shares your grief," Peña Nieto also said. Luis Felipe Puente, national coordinator of civil protection for the Interior Ministry, said 100 fatalities were recorded in Mexico City, 69 in Morelos state, 43 in Puebla state, 13 in the state of Mexico, four in Guerrero state and one in Oaxaca state. Oaxaca state is almost 480 kilometers (300 miles) from Mexico City. Among the dead were 21 schoolchildren of Enrique Rebasmen elementary school, which collapsed in the quake. Secretary of Public Education Aurelio Nuño said over 2,000 public schools suffered damage in the quake and 16 of the 212 affected schools in Mexico City sustained major damage. Mexican secretary of public function said the country will observe three days of mourning. Meanwhile, the quake has left millions of people in the affected areas without power. Peña Nieto asked the people to stay indoors while rescue operations go on in the streets. Residents however have joined rescue workers in searching for survivors. Mexico's soccer teams have helped in the relief operations with C.F. Monterrey, Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz, C.F. Pachuca, Santos Laguna, Puebla F.C. and Club Atlas urging people to bring water and non-perishable items to stadiums and other facilities.
