MGM Resorts International, a US-based hotel and entertainment giant, has officially applied for a gaming licence in Abu Dhabi. This marks a significant step in the UAE’s expanding gaming industry following the recent establishment of the General Commercial Gaming Regulatory Authority (GCGRA). Bill Hornbuckle, CEO and President of MGM Resorts, confirmed the application during the Skift Global Forum 2024. The licence, pending federal approval, would make MGM the second operator to secure a gaming permit in the UAE, following Wynn Resorts, which is developing a gaming resort on Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah. The UAE’s first integrated gaming resort by Wynn is expected to open in 2027, while MGM’s potential venture in Abu Dhabi reflects the growing interest in developing a regulated, socially responsible gaming environment in the region. The GCGRA, established in 2023, will oversee gaming regulations and licensing, ensuring compliance with international standards.
