Majority supports minimum speed limit in Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi Police’s move to implement a minimum speed on fast lanes of key roads has gathered a majority of supporters from residents, of which 78 percent of people favored the implementation. A poll conducted on social media justified how residents wanted to implement minimum speed limits, as over 81 percent of users have supported the decision. Previously, the police announced the implementation of a minimum speed of 120kmph on the two leftmost lanes of the 140kmph Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Road. They also stipulated a fine of Dh400, which started on May 1, to drivers who would run below the speed limit on the two lanes. The aim of activating the minimum speed limits is to enhance road safety. It would guide slow motorists on using the correct lanes, the police explained. The authorities added that the minimum speed of 120kmph on the fast lanes would ensure all vehicles on these tracks drive within a 20kmph margin, reducing the severity of accidents if they occur. Fewer vehicles on the two road lanes would mean motorists could always make way for emergency vehicles. Meanwhile, the announcement received messages of support from road users. In a tweet posted, a user @simonwa75539139 quoted, “There are certain types of drivers who pay no respect to or consideration of their fellow drivers… might hopefully start to correct that.” Another user, @anurag2893, also posted, “Slow drives and road blockers will be on the correct lanes now.” Many users called for implementing the move on other highways and roads in the emirate.
