She should just talk in Filipino, netizens say

MANILA – As pre-pageant activities of the 65th Miss Universe pageant kicked off on Saturday (January 14), Miss Philippines Maxine Medina has already been the subject of criticism by netizens for grammatical lapses during a press conference prior to her send-off to join the pageant. A video of Medina is going around on Facebook shows the beauty queen having committed grammatical errors in her speech when asked what her advocacy is. As transcribed by CNN Philippines, Medina's answer was "My advocacy is about the youth who has HIV, specifically the youth. 'Coz I would like to feel them the help, the hope to give them access to education, living the life they should, you know. There's something in me that I really wanted to do also is to ensure that there's out there a little child, a girl, who's just like me — a simple girl who don't know that she can be a beauty queen." Her language mentor went to Medina's defense saying people should stop comparing Medina to other beauty queens who can speak well. In an Instagram post, Abalos said: "We are second language speakers of English. Errors are normal. At the end of the day, it's just a beauty contest. Maxine will still be beautiful. She'll still be designing interiors. She has a beautiful life ahead." "I know that she has what it takes to represent our country. I am very lucky to have trained one of the most beautiful persons that I've known in this lifetime. In this world full of critics, can we just be supporters instead?" Abalos added. Medina, for her part, said she chose to answer the question in English as she has been practicing hard for the question and answer portion of the competition. Upon watching the video, netizens said Medina should instead speak in Filipino if she is more comfortable doing so. Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz and Miss Universe 1973 Margarita Moran had an advice for Medina - that she should not be afraid to talk in Filipino.
