Mocha Uson, Kiko Pangilinan speak out on controversial concerts at Bilibid jail

  DUBAI – Singer and social media activist Mocha Uson has admitted that her girl group Mocha Girls did perform at a concert inside the New Bilibid Prison in 2012, but said it was a formal concert upon the invitation of a Bureau of Corrections official. Uson was reacting to a statement by kidnapping convict and former police officer Rodolfo Magleo, who testified in Tuesday’s Justice Committee hearing on the proliferation of the illegal drug trade inside the maximum-security prison and named celebrities who performed at concerts there. The star, a vocal supporter of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, blamed anti-Duterte supporters for using the issue surrounding her group’s involvement in a “charity show” at the prison to discredit the Duterte administration. The Mocha Girls, Sharon Cuneta and Freddie Aguilar were among the celebrities named who performed at the maximum-security prison during the term of then Secretary of Justice and now Senator Leila De Lima. Meanwhile, Senator Francis Pangilinan said his wife Cuneta performed four songs at the prison in 2012 “to support RockEd’s outreach program for prisoners”. "She sang four songs for the closing portion, which is the customary format of the show. She sang 'Maging Sino Ka Man,' 'Tubig at Langis,' 'Kahit Konting Pagtingin,' and 'Kahit Maputi Na ang Buhok Ko' but only to support RockEd's outreach program for prisoners," Pangilinan said. The senator had voted against the removal of De Lima as chair of the Senate committee on justice and human rights investigating the alleged extrajudicial killings under the present administration. ‘Little Las Vegas’ The high security compound was akin to “Little Las Vegas” during De Lima’s term, witness Magleo told the investigating committee, alleging that jail guards allowed high-profile inmates to conduct events under De Lima’s protection. “These are not just ordinary concerts but concerts of famous celebrities, like Freddie Aguilar, Sharon Cuneta, Mocha Girls, Ethel Booba…some other celebrities, comedians,” Magleo said. He also said inmates like Herbert Colanggo paid De Lima millions to allow him to freely operate inside the jail. “Milyones ang ibinibigay ni Herbert Colanggo kay Secretary De Lima.
