Morissette: risks and sacrifices ‘worth it’

  DUBAI – Ahead of her first solo concert in Dubai in August, Filipino singer Morissette spoke with Expatmedia.net on the risks and sacrifices that she took on her way to become a celebrity. The Cebu-born singer inched her way to the spotlight by joining singing competitions in her home province. “I had the opportunity of acts for a lot of artists who visited in Cebu, like Yeng Constantino, Sarah Geronimo,” she told expatmedia.net during her live media interview aired from the Wish 107.5 radio bus in Manila.
“Mas lalo akong na inspire. Sabi ko sana one day makakapag ganito din ako, makaka touch din ako ng lives. Same way that they have with me (I became more inspired. I said one day I will be able to do this and touch lives, the same way they have with me),” she added. Morissette is a frequent guest on the Wish bus, with her individual live music videos on YouTube amassing more than 50 million views apiece. She’s been dubbed “Asia’s Phoenix” and the Mariah Carey of Asia due to her distinct “whistle” singing technique. Here’s our Q&A with Morissette:

When you were just starting in Cebu did you ever think you would become a big star one day?

I didn’t think, I didn’t expect but I worked hard for it. That’s always been my dream ever since to be able share my gift with so many people and touch their lives as much as I can… and to be able to have all these doors opening and platform to be able to do all of these.

What did you learn along the way?

It came with a lot of risks and sacrifices. A lot of work to be done, but worth it… I’ve also had my share of bad experiences but and worth it and I’m just really, really grateful blessings.

You’ve been compared to Mariah Carey…

Probably because of the whistle technique that I do. Working on my first album with Star Music I was able to discover so much of my singing ability. ballad. And with the help of my producer, Kiko Salazar, who also wrote Akin Ka Na Lang, and with so many friends in the industry, ayun mas nag open ang eyes ko dun and mas napapadalas ko na rin gamitin yung whistle (my eyes were opened and I began using the whistle technique more) and I’m happy .

Which song holds a special place in your life?

Oh, there’s so many songs. Right now, it would probably be Jessie J’s Who You Are. I sang Who You Are for the semifinals of The Voice Philippines although , a year later, because of that song, Jesse J. It’s very meaningful, I can say I really fought for that song.

If you didn’t make it as singer, what would you have been?

Actually that’s one of the hardest questions. Ever since I was young, I’ve always wanted to be a singer, and now that I’m on this path, this is just where I want to go. Of course I have backup plans, but priority. But I weren’t where I was right now, I’d still be a student college.
