Defendant stepped on stomach of the 14-month-old boy, causing severe internal bleeding
DUBAI – The Court of First Instance has imposed a three-year jail term on an Emirati woman who killed her infant son last July by stepping on his stomach.
As a result of stepping on his tummy, the 14-month-old baby suffered severe internal hemorrhage and died.
Court records said the defendant's younger sister claimed that her elder sibling had beaten her son many times in the past. "He constantly had bruises on his face and around his neck. The mother used to tie his feet with a sheila (Arabic word for scarf) and he used to cry all night long. Sometimes I used to hear the sound of a rattle (children's toy) as long as he cried. Once I also saw a grey bruise under his eye and when I touched that spot, I realized that it had been covered up with cream," the defendant's sister said in court.
The defendant's Indonesian maid also corroborated the testimony of the defendant's sister.
Several doctors told the court that boy was admitted to the hospital several times in the past with bruises, injuries and fractures, which the mother would claim were the result of accidents or falls.
The defendant's lawyer however said the mother client did not have any intention to kill her child and refuted the testimonies of the witnesses.
He asked for leniency from the court for the defendant, who pleaded not guilty to killing her infant son.
Presiding judge Ahmad Mohammad however gave credence to the testimonies of the witnesses and acceded to the lawyer's leniency plea by sentencing the defendant to three years in jail.
