A motorcyclist died in a crash on Sheikh Zayed Road on Wednesday morning (September 10), after colliding with a truck that made an unsafe stop on the hard shoulder. The accident happened just before the Arabian Ranches Bridge, heading towards Abu Dhabi, according to Dubai Police. Brigadier Juma bin Suwaidan, Director of the General Department of Traffic, explained that the accident was the result of “joint error”—the truck’s sudden stop on the hard shoulder due to a technical malfunction, and the motorcyclist’s failure to remain attentive. The rider died at the scene from his injuries. “Stopping on the hard shoulder unnecessarily is one of the most dangerous traffic offences, often leading to serious crashes,” Brigadier bin Suwaidan said. He stressed that the road shoulder is strictly for emergencies such as sudden breakdowns or urgent medical cases, not for convenience. Dubai Police said unsafe stops are a leading cause of “near-daily” accidents on UAE highways, resulting in severe injuries and fatalities. Penalties for violations include heavy fines, black points, and even vehicle impoundment. Motorists are urged to conduct vehicle checks before journeys, move to the far-right safe lane in case of breakdowns, and use hazard lights or warning triangles to alert other drivers. Brigadier bin Suwaidan also highlighted speeding, tailgating, and distractions like mobile phones as top causes of fatal crashes. “Dubai Police will continue to enforce strict penalties against violators, especially those committing dangerous offences that endanger lives,” he warned, urging road users to cooperate in making highways safer.
