Time spent on the internet is more than amount of time spent watching TV, report show

  ABU DHABI – UAE residents spend at least 4 hours and 25 minutes daily surfing the Internet on their computer or tablet, according to a marketing report by the We Are Social consultancy company. The same report, which was released early this year, also showed that residents surf the internet using their mobile phones for an average of three hours and 37 minutes. The amount of time they spend on the internet is more than the amount of time they spend watching TV, the report added. TV viewing by UAE residents is at an average of one hour and 42 minutes. Last year, they spent an average of two hours and four minutes watching TV. The We Are Social report said mobile penetration in the UAE is rapidly growing with 71 percent of residents using mobile messengers while 62 percent watch videos on their smartphones. Forty-one percent play mobile games and 47 percent use their mobile phones for banking. Sixty percent of residents use map services. Nordine Hadi, director of strategic alliances in the telecom/IT industry, was quoted as saying: "As in all other modern societies, the UAE too has adopted apps for a variety of services: domestic help, house cleaning, doorstep laundry services, home food, grocery delivery, chauffeurs services, among others." Hadi mentioned the Global Microbial Identifier 2015 (GMI), which revealed that of the 9.58 million UAE residents, 8.81 million are active internet users and more than 56 percent are active in social media compared to the global average, which stands at 29 per cent. He also said the app culture in the UAE is growing at a fast pace because of "convenience." However, he warned that the overuse or abuse of technology can result in nomophobia or addiction to smartphone. Hadi said, "The excitement caused by the compulsions fulfillment can be addictive and lead people to real troubles.
