123K Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh due to violence in their native state

  BURMA - Myanmar's treatment of the Rohingya have sparked protests among Muslims worldwide. Muslims in Chechnya, Indonesia, Pakistan, Germany and Australia have staged rallies in support of Rohingya Muslims while leaders of Muslim-dominated countries have either expressed concern or condemned the atrocities committed against the Rohingya in Myanmar. The Rohingya, historically called also as Arakanese Indians, are a stateless Indo-Aryan people from Rakhine state in Myanmar and there are an estimated one million Rohingya in Myanmar and up to another million refugees abroad, according to Wikipedia. Violence in Rakhine however have forced 123,600 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh, a UN official in Dhaka said. UNICEF, for its part, said in a statement that as many as 80 percent of the Rohingya who have crossed into Bangladesh are women and children and that the organization "is scaling up its response to provide refugee children with protection, nutrition, health, water and sanitation support." Myanmar has blamed "terrorists" for starting the violence. Myanmar's state media said Rohingya militants killed 12 security men in border post attacks nearly two weeks ago, prompting a second military crackdown against the Rohingya in less than a year. The first and second crackdowns had resulted in a mass exodus of Rohingya from Myanmar, many of them crossing the border to neighboring countries or boarding boats to sail to other nations. The Rohingya, who are denied citizenship by Myanmar, are considered some of the most persecuted people in the world, CNN said. While Myanmar says they are Bangladeshi, Bangladesh believes they're Burmese. In Grozny, capital of Chechnya, thousands of people marched through the capital to express solidarity with the Rohingya. A government statement said the protest in Chechnya, which is part of the Russian Federation, was attended by more than a million people. CNN's former Moscow Bureau Chief Jill Dougherty said protests in Chechnya are heavily regulated and typically orchestrated by authorities, adding that the protests could be an effort by Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov to position himself as a global Muslim leader. Kadyrov had called that attacks on Rohingya as "genocide." Smaller protests outside Myanmar embassies in Indonesia, Pakistan, Germany and Australia have been reported. Bernama news in Malaysia said the country's foreign minister has summoned Myanmar's ambassador to express Kuala Lumpur's concern. Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi talked to Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi and is set to meet with her counterpart in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on Tuesday. Pakistani Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif expressed "deep anguish" at the continuing violence, which he described as "deplorable." The Afghan Taliban, using its channel on the Telegram app, called on Muslims worldwide "to not forget these oppressed brothers of yours." Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was due to arrive in Myanmar on Tuesday for talks with the country's ofifcials, including Suu Kyi but it is unclear if the Rohingya issue will be brought up or if it is a priority in the discussions. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he is "deeply concerned about the security, humanitarian and human rights situation in Myanmar's Rakhine state." "The authorities in Myanmar must take determined action to put an end to this vicious cycle of violence and to provide security and assistance to all those in need," he said.
