The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has introduced an increased VIP access fee, raising eyebrows with a steep price hike from P800 (Dh51) to P8,000 (Dh513). According to the new operator, the San Miguel-led New NAIA Infrastructure Corporation (NNIC), the increase is a necessary move to prevent abuse of the previous system and ensure resources are reserved for designated VIPs. In a statement released on Friday (October 11), NNIC explained that the former system had been subject to misuse. The minimal charge of P800 allowed virtually any passenger to take advantage of the expedited services meant for dignitaries or individuals with special security needs. “The previous system for VIP services was prone to misuse and abuse,” NNIC said. “To ensure VIP services are not abused, non-officials will now pay P8,000 per person for expedited service.” This change ensures that only those with critical responsibilities or high-ranking positions can access VIP services free of charge. Under the new protocol, the complimentary service will continue to be available for government officials, foreign dignitaries, and other individuals with essential roles. “Official VIPs are unaffected as designated VIPs retain complimentary service,” the operator clarified.

Services for PWDs remain unchanged

NNIC emphasized that the new VIP policy does not impact the services offered to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). Airlines and airport operators remain responsible for assisting PWDs during check-in, boarding, and deplaning. PWDs receive assistance such as wheelchairs and luggage handling at no extra charge. “Services and assistance for PWDs at the airport remain the responsibility of the airline company and airport operator,” NNIC said. The consortium also pointed out that rates for large groups, such as meet-and-greet events requiring expedited services, would be handled on a case-by-case basis. “Rates will depend on the number of people, level of service, specific requirements, and other relevant factors,” NNIC explained. The increased fees are part of the new operator’s broader efforts to rehabilitate NAIA, one of the world’s most criticized airports. The operator noted that 82.16 percent of the revenue from these higher fees will go directly to the government, helping to improve airport infrastructure and maintain security standards.

Parking fee hike

In addition to the VIP fee hike, NNIC also raised overnight parking fees by 300 percent, from P300 (Dh19) to P1,200 (Dh77). The consortium, which won a 15-year concession to manage NAIA, is tasked with rehabilitating the aging facility, bringing much-needed upgrades to the airport’s infrastructure. The consortium includes San Miguel Holdings Corporation, South Korea’s Incheon International Airport Corporation, RMM Asian Logistics Incorporated, and RLW Aviation Development Incorporated.
