Exoplanets are temperate meaning they could have water on the surface, could support life
WASHINGTON - Seven Earth-like planets or exoplanets have been discovered orbiting the dwarf star TRAPPIST-1 located 40 light-years away from our solar system, according to a study published in the journal Nature yesterday.
A light-year is how astronomers measure distance in space by determining how far a beam of light travels in one year, which is equivalent to six trillion miles.
The findings were announced in a highly-anticipated press conference held at the NASA headquarters also yesterday. NASA informed media about the press conference on Tuesday and the organization was tight-lipped about what would be announced thus prompting excitement over the announcement.
To recall, astronomers announced last May that they found three exoplanets orbiting TRAPPIST-1 and the recent study showed that there are actually seven exoplanets. TRAPPIST-1 is considered near our solar system.
An exoplanet is the term given to an Earth-like planet that is temperate, meaning it could have water on their surface and support life.
The discovery outside of our solar system is considered rare by astronomers because all seven planets are about the same size as Earth and are temperate
"This is the first time that so many planets of this kind are found around the same star," said Michael Gillon, lead study author and astronomer of the University of Liège in Belgium.
The seven exoplanets orbit around TRAPPIST-1 in close formation and are believed to be rocky planets, not gaseous like Jupiter.
Three of the seven Earth-like planets that have been named TRAPPIST-1e, 1f and 1g may even have oceans on the surface. Among the three. TRAPPIST 1f is deemed by astronomers as the best candidate where life could be found because it is a bit cooler than Earth, may have a suitable atmosphere and enough greenhouse gases.
Meanwhile, Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of NASA Science Mission Directorate, said: "This discovery could be a significant piece in the puzzle of finding habitable environments, places that are conducive to life. Answering the question 'are we alone?' is a top science priority, and finding so many planets like these for the first time in the habitable zone is a remarkable step forward toward that goal."
