US President Joe Biden announced the first wave of penalties on Russia after Russian President Vladimir Putin escalated his aggression against Ukraine. "This is the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine," President Biden remarked. Sirens and explosions were heard in Ukraine’s capital of Kyiv on Thursday as Russia launched a military operation in Ukraine, attacking several cities with missiles and dispatching troops to the country. Videos showed Russia firing missiles at military airports in Kyiv, Kramatorsk, Kharkiv, and elsewhere. Nations have vowed to take action against Russia, with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison telling a news briefing that Australia “always stand up to bullies, and we will be standing up to Russia, along with all of our partners". In Canada, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his government will prohibit Canadians from doing business with the so-called autonomous states of Luhansk and Donetsk. Japan will also block the issuing of Russian bonds in Japan and freeze the assets of specific Russian individuals, according to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Meanwhile, North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) chief Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday denounced Russia’s “reckless and unprovoked attack” on Ukraine, warning it put “countless” lives in jeopardy. “I strongly condemn Russia’s reckless and unprovoked attack on Ukraine, which puts at risk countless civilian lives,” Stoltenberg said in a statement. “Once again, despite our repeated warnings and tireless efforts to engage in diplomacy, Russia has chosen the path of aggression against a sovereign and independent country,” Stoltenberg said in a statement. “This is a grave breach of international law, and a serious threat to Euro-Atlantic security.
