Cavaliers general manager defends move to bench James, 2 other players

  CLEVELAND, Ohio - The NBA was unhappy with the decision of the Cleveland Cavaliers to put on bench the team's so-called Big Three players – LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love – when the franchise played against the LA Clipper last Saturday at the Staples Center. Of course, James didn't like the move either. The Cavs decided to bench James so he won't bear the burden of carrying the team by himself since Irving and Love were recovering from knee injuries. "He was mad, but I just thought for him it was the right decision. Not to go out there and try to carry the whole load by himself and playing more minutes," Cavs coach Tyronn Lue told reporters, referring to James. Seven minutes after the decision to bench the Big Three, Cavaliers general manager David Griffin said the NBA office called him and told him they were not happy with the move. Griffin told ESPN, "I feel bad for the league. I really do. But it is what it is for us from an injury standpoint. We literally had one guy rest tonight and everybody else was reasonably injured. I don't feel like we did anything terribly egregious." With James, Irving and Love out of the game, the Cavaliers lost to the Clippers, 108-78. Meanwhile, Clippers coach Doc Rivers said the NBA should look into the back-to-back scheduling of the games broadcast on TV network ABC. Rivers recommended the league refrain from scheduling teams playing in nationally broadcast games for two games in as many days. "We have to protect our product. It's hard. It's impossible, if you actually knew what went into scheduling, but the look of back-to-back ABC national games -- it's not good," said Rivers in a press conference after last Saturday's game.
