Nearly 20,000 tailgaters fined in Abu Dhabi

DUBAI – Nearly 20,000 motorists were fined for tailgating in Abu Dhabi in the first half of 2021, according to Abu Dhabi Police. Police said 19,327 motorists were fined on Abu Dhabi roads between January and June this year, as authorities installed more sophisticated radars to catch violators. Tailgating is one of the major causes of accidents on UAE roads, with police urging motorists to keep a safe distance between vehicles. "Not keeping a safe distance causes traffic accidents that result in human and material losses," according to the Traffic and Patrols Directorate. Under the UAE traffic law, tailgating is punishable with a fine of Dh400 and four black points on the motorist’s traffic file.

Only emergency vehicles can pass through the fast lane at any length of time
